New UEFA competition before UCL in USA

UEFA to introduce new yearly tournament before Champions League in the USA

L’Équipe report tonight that UEFA will introduce a new yearly pre-season tournament before the start of the Champions League campaign from 2024, that will see four European clubs including the previous year’s winner face each other.

The document given to broadcasters as part of the call for bids for the 2024-27 period, obtained by L’Équipe, describes an opening tournament that will have four games – semi-finals, a final and a third place match, but it has also been indicated that the full details would be released “in due time”.

The tournament is very likely to be played in the USA, with the aim being to promote the Champions League as well as bringing in substantial revenue.

From 2024, the tournament proper will feature 36 teams instead of 32, in a league system that will see each team play 8 games. The top 8 teams will advance to the last 16 and the teams from 9th to 24th will face each other in a play-off to then go through to the knockouts.

The European Super Cup could also be changing, with UEFA considering a match between the winners of the Europa League and the Conference League instead.
